I think this is the perfect example of how to get a book deal. The author of the blog www.stuffwhitepeoplelike.com has just received a book deal from random house. Basically the blog has been a huge hit with white people who love the irony of reading and laughing about their every day lives with 23,076,753 hits in 3 months. Random House saw the hype it was getting and said “want some cheddar?” and they said “Hell yeah!”

I think it’s a great example of how the web is an excellent forum to get noticed and get your work out to the people with little cost or effort. Obviously this kind of stuff is pretty rare, but you can guarantee that this blog writer would never have got noticed otherwise. White people like blogging!

It’s an iPhone blog off here at Marker, kind of like a bake off but posts instead of cakes, traffic instead of taste and iphone instead of trophy..the person whose blog post(s) gets the most unique visitors and ‘genuine’ comments within a month wins an iPhone. Competition restarts each month and sorry but limited to Marker employees only. So choose your alliance and post some comments for one person this month and move onto another Marker blogger next month (then we all get to win).

Most Marker employees have personal blogs and seem to concentrate on them rather than contribute to a company blog but you may have noticed the blog post volume has lifted in the past few dates, with competition bloggers closely watching stats via analytics. Interesting to see what strategies people are taking to improve their placing and if the competitive nature of those few continues and sets in place some regular blog contributions well past the finish date.

Only question is since the CD at Marker already has an iPhone what incentive will we need to get him to share his wisdom, some new colour pencils or perhaps some new fonts?

It is not getting a great deal of engagement at the moment, however, they have just recently launched last month and I haven’t seen much about it in the blogosphere so it must be a soft launch. It is a nice looking blog and the content is good, if a little suspiciously too well polished. I think this is an interesting approach for Coca-Cola to take. There is a huge amount of value in their brand and history and this is very much the right sort of approach I think.

Top marks for effort, I think this is a well executed strategy so far.

I just thought Id post this to hopefully assist others with this problem.

I have seen and read numerous posts on IIS permission errors. A number of articles correctly point out that the impersonate user or if not impersonating then the NETWORK_SERVICE account and the ASPNET account, need modify access to the folder you want to write to. But what if you have done that and still no success?

In the application and security event viewer logs I was getting messages that the user did not have the rights to log in as the batch service or to run as a local service. I was also getting errors in my web app that said the user does not have write permission to the hard drive. In desperation I even tried giving all users full permission to the root and everything below it and STILL it said read only.
I was running a .net2.0 application from a virtual directory under a secure root, trying to upload a file using http to a folder in a non secure .net2.0 virtual directory.

What I found was that if the secure site (which did not contain a website) was set up with the ASP.NET version set to 2.0 then every site/virtual directories under this secure site had read-only access to the hard drive. In other words, the secure.markerstudio.com site had to have ASP.NET version set to 1.1.4322, so secure.markerstudio.com/cmanager could upload files into a different folder. All other virtual diretories/sites under this secure site can be whatever ASP.NET version they should be, just the root folder had to be ASP.NET 1.
I am still at a loss as to why asp.net 2.0 should make all access to the hard drive read-only regardless of NTFS permissions – If anyone has anything to add please feel free to comment.

Being a part of a very important club (burger connoisseur’s), I received an email yesterday from Burger Fuel telling me to expect a postcard to my address addressed. It’s a marketer’s greatest fear – something not being perfect.

The only mention of sorry was “sorry if it freaked you out”. They then urge you to use the postcard voucher like you stole it, for all it’s worth.

Getting a perfect corporate picture about your company and communicating this immaculately isn’t everything. Here Burger Fuel have leveraged a mistake to make me like their brand even more. I’m also looking forward to receiving this postcard, when if I didn’t know about it I probably wouldn’t care for it at all.

The same principal applies to blogging, being honest and communicating this will improve your customer relationships. Dell’s battery recall hit news everywhere, surely you’d imagine this to be a bad thing for their brand. Instead of taking the hit, they had a blog about it. People could post their comments publicly (complaints and anger included) and Dell employees commented back to them. People will see through the slick brand and communications, you may as well show them through it and have your say whenever someone sees something they don’t like.

DISCLOSURE: I’m a sucker for juicy beef, bacon, avocado, aioli and relish.
